(Pocket-lint) – Since Samsung removed the physical home button on its handsets – way back when the S8 was launched – the method of taking a screenshot has changed. And with a modern Samsung Galaxy S device like the S22 series, you might launch Bixby or load the power-off screen instead.

So how do you take a screenshot on your Galaxy S21 or S22 (or indeed an older device like the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20)? There are a number of different options, with some Samsung additions to make it more useful than your average Android device. Here’s how.

Galaxy S21 or S22 screenshot with buttons

Samsung supports the traditional Android method of taking a one-touch screenshot:

  1. Make sure the content you want to capture is on the screen.
  2. Press volume down and the standby/power button on the right side at the same time – but only briefly, not too long.
  3. The screen is captured, flashed and saved in the “Screenshots” album/folder in Gallery.

If you’re using much older hardware, from the Galaxy S7 or earlier, such devices use a combination of a sleep and home button instead.

You’ll need to make sure this is a quick press of the two buttons – regardless of what device you own – as a longer press and hold will launch the power control screen.

Galaxy S21 or S22 screenshot with Smart Capture/Screenshot toolbar

The next thing you should know about screenshots on a Galaxy S series is that Smart Capture – now dubbed the Screenshot Toolbar – will do a lot more for you. This is something quite unique to Samsung and allows you to do things with your screenshot instantly instead of having to open it in your gallery.

  1. Make sure the toolbar is enabled in Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recording. It is enabled by default; The setting is called “Show toolbar after capture”.
  2. When you take a screenshot (using buttons or palm swipes, the latter is described below), you get additional options at the bottom of the page in a banner (as shown above). You can draw, crop, or share, but the most useful is the scrolling capture, denoted by the arrows pointing down.
  3. Tap Scroll Capture to include parts of the display that you can see, such as B. on a long web page – this is really useful.
  4. Do you want the original screenshot to be deleted after sharing from the toolbar? This can also be selected under “Settings” > “Advanced functions” > “Screenshots and screen recording” > “Delete from toolbar after sharing”.

Galaxy S21 or S22 palm swipe gesture screenshot

An alternative method that Samsung offers is one that’s been available for a few generations of the S series and uses gesture control. Here’s how to make it work.

  1. Go to Settings > Advanced features > Motions & gestures > “Palm swipe to capture”.
  2. When enabled, swipe the side of your hand across the screen. You can swipe left or right, both work.
  3. The screen is captured, flashed and saved in the “Screenshots” album/folder in Gallery.

Note that if you’ve mastered the button press and don’t want to swipe to capture, you can disable palm swiping so that this never happens—even accidentally.

This third method isn’t a complete screenshot, but it’s a very useful way to capture information that’s being shown on the display using a feature called Smart Select. If you’ve been a Note user in the past, some of this might sound familiar.

Smart Select is an Edge panel that you can swipe into from the Edge screen (when enabled).

  1. Go to Settings > Display > “Edge Panels” and make sure this is checked.
  2. Click on this menu and you can activate the Smart Select Edge panel – select “Panels” and then scroll right to select it. You can activate several panel types, e.g. B. also apps.
  3. Then go to the page you want to record from.
  4. Open the edge panel with a swipe from the side of the screen. This may require multiple swipes if you have multiple panels enabled.
  5. Choose the shape or type of selection you want to make – rectangular, oval, pin to screen or (best) create a GIF via “Animation”.
  6. You are returned to the capture page with a frame to make this selection. Change the size or position of the frame and click Done. When making a GIF, press record and stop when you’re done.
  7. You’ll then be shown what you’ve captured, with the option to draw it, share it, save it, and in the case of text, extract it so you can paste it elsewhere.
  8. When you pin a selection, the captured selection will float over everything until you close it. It’s very useful for information you want to refer to, such as: B. an address or a reference number.

Galaxy S21 Ultra or S22 Ultra screenshot with S Pen

Since the launch of the S21 Ultra, there has been compatibility with the S Pen stylus, but only for the Ultra model in the range. The S22 takes things up a notch by including a body-stowed S Pen. One of the great features of the S Pen is that it easily enables Smart Select, which lets you select with the stylus. Here’s how.

  1. Eject the S Pen from the body (S22 Ultra only) to enable Air Command by default (it’s a pop-up menu).
  2. Select “Smart Select” from this menu and create and save your selection as you wish as described above. It’s a really handy feature of the S Pen.
