(Pocket-lint) – Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the biggest mobile event of the year. The show sees the launch of many of the year’s best smartphones, smartwatches and tablets, as well as the emergence of the hottest new trends in mobile.
Outside of the consumer space, it also attracts many industry heavyweights to talk about the future of mobile such as 5G, mobile hardware, VR and other related technologies.
Here’s everything you need to know about the show.
When is Mobile World Congress?
- MWC Barcelona: February 28 to March 3, 2022
In 2022, Mobile World Congress plans to return to its regular date on the calendar — that’s late February. In 2021 it was postponed to June and only a few companies took part in the fair.
While the official dates are February 28-March 3, these are the dates the MWC conference schedule covers – often the media launches take place in the days before, February 26-27, giving us a few days to rush announcements.
The GSMA is hosting a physical event for Mobile World Congress and it looks like the show will be well attended with broad representation.
Which companies have withdrawn from the MWC 2022?
As has been the trend of recent conferences, some companies have confirmed that they will not be attending the show due to the current pandemic status.
We heard that Sony Mobile will not be present at MWC 2022.
We also heard that Lenovo will not be there.
MWC UPDATE: Due to the ongoing trends surrounding COVID, Lenovo’s activation at MWC 2022 will be entirely virtual.

What to expect from Mobile World Congress 2022
Any normal year would see a slew of launches from some of the top handset manufacturers – companies like Sony Mobile and Nokia typically use the MWC to launch new devices, there are often big showcases from companies like Qualcomm and Samsung.
MWC 2022 will be a little different, but it still looks like there will be a lot of announcements from brands. All times given below are CET, the times for the MWC in Barcelona.
Samsung at MWC 2022
Samsung already has a bumpy collection of launches for 2022 – the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra have been announced, as well as the Galaxy Tab S8 family of devices. There’s some speculation that Samsung could use Mobile World Congress to unveil the Galaxy A53, its next mid-range device. Samsung has booked an event for Sunday night where it is believed Samsung will unveil new laptops.
Honor at MWC 2022
Honor has confirmed that it will announce the Honor Magic 4 at Mobile World Congress and confirmed a timing for the launch event. It is expected to be an update for the Honor Magic 3.
Huawei at MWC 2022
Huawei may have fallen out of favor in the US – with a major Google issue restricting its phones for specific reasons – but it’s still a big player. Given the flagship models already launched, we expect Huawei to talk more about life away from Google and push some of its other product lines like laptops and tablets.
Lenovo at MWC 2022
- February 28, 12:00 (virtual)
Lenovo has said it won’t be physically at MWC 2022, but we suspect it plans to announce the Legion Y90, a gaming phone, and the Y700, a gaming tablet. The company has confirmed a virtual presence at MWC and touted a launch event in China that looks like it will be for Legion devices.
Nokia at MWC 2022
Nokia usually presents a full range of devices at Mobile World Congress. It has already released some devices in early 2022, including affordable devices for the US market and updated Nokia G models. That leads us to suspect it leaves room for another announcement that’s higher on the scale for something at MWC. However, there is no confirmed press event.
Nothing at MWC 2022
There hasn’t been any confirmation from Nothing, but with rumors of a Nothing Android smartphone mounting on the rise, what better place to stoke those rumors than at Mobile World Congress. Nothing’s founder, Carl Pei, has been talking more and more about Android over the past week, so we wouldn’t be surprised to hear any news about a Nothing phone at Mobile World Congress.
OnePlus at MWC 2022
OnePlus has already unveiled the OnePlus 10 Pro, its latest flagship phone, in China, but the company has confirmed it will be showing the latest devices at Mobile World Congress. We don’t expect any new announcements, but we would expect a boost for the OnePlus 10 Pro for its global audience.
Oppo at MWC 2022
We know the Oppo Find X5 is in the works and launching ahead of the show, but Oppo is also talking about its presence at Mobile World Congress. Word is it’ll be showing more than just phones – with the confirmation of an event at MWC.
Poco at MWC 2022
Poco has scheduled the launch of its next device for Mobile World Congress with an event on Monday. The company is expected to launch the Poco X4 Pro, which aims to deliver big performance for little money. Poco will also have an exhibit at the show.
Rich at MWC 2022
Realme has confirmed that it will host an MWC launch event. We expect the Realme GT 2 and GT 2 Pro to be launched internationally after their China launch. We’re also expecting a new charging tech to be unveiled, claiming to offer 150W charging. There is also talk of Realme’s magnetic charging solution MagDart. We also saw Realme’s Chief Marketing Officer, Francis Wong, say he’s heading to Europe with a 2K display. There is a lot of fuss about Realme at the MWC.
Qualcomm at MWC 2022
Qualcomm looks good at Mobile World Congress. Much of the talk will revolve around the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but you can also expect announcements around automotive, AR and VR, as well as 5G and future technologies. Qualcomm has a series of events planned, including an MWC keynote.
Xiaomi at MWC 2022
Xiaomi has already introduced the Xiaomi 12 in China, but we usually expect a follow-up at Mobile World Congress to bring this phone to the global market. There is currently no confirmation, but we expect to see Xiaomi in Barcelona and we await announcements from the company.
Pocket-lint plans to attend Mobile World Congress in 2022.
