(Pocket-lint) – A good racing game offers something that no other genre can match – a sense of true speed and the urgency of knowing that the slightest twitch of your steering or a press of the brake pedal could mean the difference between first and second place.
The Xbox Series X and S have a massive library of racing games to choose from thanks to their excellent backwards compatibility options. So we’ve rounded up some of the best options for you here. If you want a different game genre, check out our other Xbox listings below.
What are the best racing games for Xbox Series X and S?
- ForzaHorizon 5
- dirt 5
- F1 2021
- wreckfest
- WRC10
ForzaHorizon 5
The Xbox’s premier racing game series is back, and the Horizon Festival it’s offering is as entertaining as anything you could ask for. This time the action has shifted to Mexico, and where you slowly earn better cars in other games, Horizon 5 showers you with it.
Whether it’s in a powerful jeep or an actual supercar, the open world is so much fun to explore and there’s a crazy number of races and activities to take part in – before you go online there’s tons of events to which you can sink teeth into.
dirt 5
If you’re a particular fan of taking your vehicles off the road and onto other surfaces, then the Dirt series has been a solid choice for many years. Its fifth iteration looks great on Microsoft’s latest consoles with great lighting and a fun selection of tracks.
The real star, however, is its arcade-handling engine, making it super fun to slide around on mud, gravel and everything in between, with the best tracks switching between different surfaces on the fly as you race.
F1 2021
Back to the tarmac, however, is F1 2021, which offers an extremely detailed recreation of what it would be like to actually drive through a Formula 1 season, with all the teams and cars portrayed in amazing accuracy.
The sense of speed you get throwing one of these precision-engineered cars down a straight while fighting for first place on the podium is pretty much unmatched, and the practice it takes to get really good at it is one too control is its own reward.
wreckfest
There was a golden heyday when racing games all had great damage engines to accurately reflect all the bumps and crashes you get into. Now that’s rare again, but Wreckfest is basically a whole game built around a really amazing damage system.
It absolutely lets you destroy your vehicles, which come in all shapes and sizes, and its online races are therefore some of the most insanely chaotic fun you can have. Winning is nice, but taking out other racers in a shower of sparks and debris is also fun.
WRC 10
After all, no list of great racing games is complete without at least one title showcasing the joy of rallying, a discipline that pushes cars to the limit on trails that could hardly be considered a track in a street car.
WRC 10 is the latest in a long series that has only grown in popularity and there’s nothing else you can match if you’re looking for long stages packed with complex corners and formations to ensure your reactions need to be spot on Speed.
More about this story
Every game on this list has been tested and played through by our team to ensure it deserves inclusion.
We’ve played through their campaigns, put hours into their multiplayer offerings, and carefully benchmarked them against direct competitors to ensure they represent the most satisfying and rewarding options on their platform.
We’re not interested in pointless numbers or superfluous details – we just want to provide an easy-to-understand review that will give you an idea of how it’s going to be played. And don’t think for a second that the games haven’t been fully tested because the reviews are succinct.
We have been dealing with tech and games since 2003 and in many cases have not only reviewed the game in question, but also the previous generations – right up to the first release on the market. There are also many titles that we considered that didn’t make it into any of our buying guides.
