Due for release later this year, the PS5 will bring a huge boost in performance alongside a plethora of new features – and there’s apparently plenty more to announce. But while improved performance is a welcome change, many gamers are concerned that their extensive PS4 game libraries won’t be compatible with the PS5 – much like PS3 games were when the PS4 was released in 2013.

The good news is that Sony has confirmed that backwards compatibility with PS4 titles will come to PS5, and some might even see a performance boost. Here’s everything you need to know about backwards compatibility on PS5.

Sony is backwards compatible with the PS5

During Mark Cerny’s PS5 technical showcase, the lead designer confirmed that the PS5’s GPU will offer what the company calls “legacy modes” for PS4 and PS4 Pro games. This allows Sony to bring PS4 titles to the next-gen console with no loss of functionality and, we assume, very little input from developers – similar to the “Boost Mode” on the PS4 Pro, which boosts the performance of unsupported PS4s -Title can increase.

During the tech showcase, Cerny confirmed that the PS5 would only support the “100 Best PS4 Games at Launch.” That seems logical, but considering the competing Xbox Series X offers backwards compatibility not just with the entire Xbox One library, but with the entire Xbox collection, it’s incredibly limited – and PS4 fans largely agreed.

That prompted Sony to update the technical showcase post on the PlayStation Blog in the days following the reveal, stating that the “overwhelming majority of the 4000+ PS4 titles currently available” will be playable on the PS5 when they are later released will be released this year.

The blog post goes into detail, claiming that the company has already tested hundreds of games and plans to test thousands more ahead of the next-gen console’s launch. It won’t stop there either; Sony claims games will run at increased frequency, resulting in increased visual fidelity and higher frame rates.

“We anticipate that backward compatible titles will run at increased frequency on PS5, allowing them to benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We are currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to identify issues that need to be addressed by the original software developers.”

Will the PS5 offer backwards compatibility with PS3 games?

While Sony has finally embraced backwards compatibility with open arms, interest appears to be limited to PS4 games. That means you won’t be able to play your favorite PS3, PS2 or PS1 games on the PS5 without subscribing to Sony’s cloud-based PlayStation Now gaming service.

As annoying as this is for consumers, it makes sense from a business perspective. Offering built-in universal backwards compatibility would remove a majority of PlayStation Now subscribers, as it generally takes a while for new titles to appear on the service. Gamers subscribe to the service primarily to gain access to older games that aren’t compatible with the PS4 – something they wouldn’t need to do if they could just plug their old hard drives into the PS5.

Although the PS5 doesn’t offer built-in backwards compatibility with PS3 games, you should be able to access a number of PS3-era games through PlayStation Now.

Which games are backwards compatible on PS5?
