How to video chat in Fortnite

Fortnite has always allowed you to chat with your teammates and other players using a headset, but thanks to a collaboration with app Houseparty, you can now take it a step further and video chat during gameplay.
At the moment it only works on PC, PS4 and PS5 – and you’ll need to have your phone handy when playing – but if that sounds good then here’s how to get started.
What you need for a video chat in Fortnite
As mentioned, the first thing to note is that you must be playing on PC, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Other platforms may be supported in the future, but that’s it for now.
You will also need either an Android or iOS phone or tablet with the Houseparty app installed.
That’s it. You can use a gaming headset or Bluetooth headphones if you want to boost your audio quality, but otherwise you can just chat through your phone’s microphone and speakers as usual.
How to start Fortnite video chat
First, open the Houseparty app on iOS or Android and connect it to Fortnite using your Epic Games account. You can find the option to connect from the settings or the TV icon.
As a bonus for connecting your accounts, you will receive the free Rainbow Fog Wrap as a gift on your Fortnite account.
Once the accounts are connected, open up Fortnite on your PC or PlayStation console and have your phone or tablet ready – make sure it’s in a stable position where the selfie camera can fully see your face . You may need to prop it up against something on your desk or table for this to work.
You’ll then need to join your friends in the Houseparty app as usual, and once you’ve done that, their in-game video feeds will appear on the left-hand side and you can continue chatting as you play. The video will be cropped to only focus on people’s faces and a Fortnite background will be automatically inserted.
Fortnite video chat security features
Since Fortnite has a large audience of young players, Epic and Houseparty made sure to include some security features.
First of all, keep in mind that Houseparty itself is designed for people over the age of 13 and you must be that old to create an account.
Epic added a toggle for the Houseparty video chat option to Fortnite’s parental controls, so concerned parents can easily disable the option entirely if they’re concerned.
The only people who can join a chat room are the friends of people who are already in it, which limits the size of a group. People in the group can also tap the padlock icon in the Houseparty group at any time to prevent anyone else from joining – and also unlock it at any time to let more people in.
It’s also easy to block specific people from chatting – just tap on their video in the Houseparty app and select “Block”.
Within Fortnite there is also an option to report a specific player’s behavior by going into Settings and then “Reports/Feedback”.
Will Fortnite Video Chat be available on Xbox, Switch or Mobile?
We do not know it! All Epic has said so far is that the company will “let everyone know if we can support more platforms in the future.”
That’s a bit uncertain, but unless Sony has signed an exclusivity deal for PlayStation, it seems highly unlikely that the option will never appear on other platforms – you might just have to wait a while.
With the game no longer officially available on iPhone at all, and Apple and Epic locked in an intense legal battle, it’s a safe bet that video chat isn’t coming to Fortnite on iOS anytime soon. Not on the App Store, anyway – here’s how to play Fortnite on iPhone and iPad with cloud gaming.
