Apple first attempted to master handwriting in 1993 with the Apple Newton. The device, which was a precursor to the iPad that would be launched some 17 years later, didn’t really pass the test, and the company stopped making the Newton five years later in 1998 after poor reviews and a lack of consumer appetite.

It took Apple another 10 years after launching the original iPad in 2010 to give us handwriting tools again.

Translation to typed text isn’t foolproof with Scribble, but it got the word or characters we were looking for, even with our scribble, about 90-95 percent of the time.

Back in the day, the only real reason to get the Apple Pencil for iPad was if you were an artist or a graphic designer. And even then, having to put the pen down to write a quick message or type something was tedious.

Apple Scribble stops this flow of interruptions and allows you to effortlessly switch between drawing and writing.

That said, it doesn’t solve one of the main problems faced by many. This handwriting is now slower than typing for most, and once you get used to automatically correcting your spelling, all of your characteristics will be visible in your handwritten prose.
