(Pocket-lint) – Fujifilm has announced its latest flagship mirrorless camera, the X-H2S, and surprisingly it looks like a video powerhouse.

The X-H2S is the most powerful X-series camera to date, in terms of both video and still image capabilities. It is equipped with a stacked 26.15 MP APS-C sensor supported by a processor that is twice as fast as its predecessor.

It can autofocus stills at a blazing-fast 40 frames per second with its electronic shutter, or 15 per second with a satisfying mechanical click.

There’s five-axis image stabilization in the body and Fujifilm claims it offers an advantage of up to 7 stops.

The X-H2S has a magnesium body with a prominent LCD display on top for checking settings. Unusually, there’s no shutter speed dial on this version, potentially marking the switch to a more video-oriented camera, and this is bolstered by the addition of a dedicated video record button.

On this front, the LCD monitor is a fully articulated, fold-out display with a resolution of 1.62 million pixels. It can be used in any orientation without hitting the full-size microphone input or HDMI output.

The X-H2S can record video at up to 6.2K 30fps with an unusual 3:2 aspect ratio (for added editing flexibility) or a whopping 4K 120fps in the usual 16:9 variant.

The new processor enables internal recording in 4:2:2 10bit Apple ProRes, with support for a wide range of codecs including ProRes 422 HQ.

To keep up with those memory-hungry codecs, the X-H2S has a CFexpress Type B slot alongside the usual SD card.

To avoid overheating issues that have plagued Canon lately, Fujifilm is selling an optional fan that fits the rear of the X-H2S for longer video recordings.

The Fujifilm X-H2S will be available in July 2022, with some retailers accepting pre-orders from today.
