(Pocket-lint) – Over the past few years, YouTube has steadily added features to help creators become more engaged with their communities and generate revenue in a way that allows fans to show their appreciation.

Many of these features are designed to help subscribers and fans show that they are a “super fan,” and one of these features is known as super chat.

What is YouTube Super Chat?

Super Chat essentially allows viewers to pay to pin a comment on live streams. So when someone goes live, viewers will see a cash icon in the chat window and can click it to set an amount of money and send a featured comment.

Google describes Super Chat as a “highlighted message in the chat stream that stands out from the crowd to get even more attention from your favorite creator”.

Super chat messages appear in the chat feed like other chat messages, but are highlighted. These messages are also pinned to the top of the chat window. The more a viewer pays for their Super Chat message, the longer the message stays in the stream.

What are super stickers?

In addition to Super Chat, viewers can also send so-called Super Stickers. Super Stickers are animated stickers that stand out in the Super Chat messages in a similar way, but add an extra level of customization to the message.

How does Super Chat work?

Super Chat and Super Sticker are available to YouTube creators as long as those creators meet the necessary eligibility requirements (including monetization in the YouTube Partners Program).

Creators must then enable Super Chat and Super Sticker functionality for the feature to work. Once that’s done, viewers can share their appreciation for the content by using Super Chat when a creator is live.

YouTube creators also have the ability to moderate and manage Super Chat and Super Stickers, including the ability to block the use of specific words or phrases.

Great chat for viewers

To use Super Chat as a viewer, you must donate money, and then your comment will be pinned to the top of the chat for up to five hours. Keep in mind that creators can blacklist certain chat words and prohibit viewer harassment.

When someone goes live on YouTube, you’ll see a cash icon in the chat window. Click on it to open a slider that you can touch and drag to set the amount of money you want to send to the creator.

The more you pay, the longer the comment will be pinned at the top. You’ll also get a few more characters for your comment and it’ll be highlighted in a different color to help live streamers see the paid comment better. When the comment is eventually moved, creators can click through the Super Chats at the top of their chat window to see them all.

YouTubers currently receive 70% of revenue sent via Super Chat and Super Sticker, with the rest of the money going to YouTube. YouTube creators can track how much money they’ve made from Super Chat and previous messages sent through the feature in YouTube Studio here.

How to send super chat messages

Here are Google’s instructions on how to use Super Chat:

1. Select the dollar sign in a live chat. Live chat must be visible and mobile must be in portrait mode.
2. Choose SEND A SUPER CHAT.
3. To select an amount, either drag the slider or enter the desired value.
4. Optionally enter your message.
5. Choose BUY AND SEND.
6. Follow the instructions to complete your purchase.

You can shop on YouTube on your computer or in the YouTube app.

Does Super Chat cost money?

Yes, but there is no set amount. You can decide how much you want to send to the creators. According to YouTube, the tool is designed for viewers aged 18 and over. In other words, people with a credit card. When the transaction is complete, your Public Super Chat will be broadcast to all live chat viewers and you will receive a receipt via email. Super Chats are non-refundable.

What about super thank you?

Super Thanks is another feature YouTube introduced that is similar to Super Chat but designed for any video – not live streams.

Like Super Chat, Super Thanks allows viewers to leave featured comments on videos. When it’s enabled, you’ll see a super thank you button under the main YouTube player near the share button. YouTube creators must be eligible for this feature to work, but they must also first enable it in YouTube Studio.

Again, this is a monetized feature, so viewers choose an amount to pay for their super thank you message. The message is then highlighted in the comments section and stands out from the crowd. There are also animations that can appear alongside super thank you messages.

As with Super Chat, creators receive 70% of the money from all Super Thank You messages. So this is a great way to support your favorite creators.
