introduction

Not exactly a household name, at least not outside of some core European markets, Archos has been on the smartphone scene for a number of years with mixed success. A partnership with Nubia (a ZTE-owned smartphone maker) has recently allowed them to expand their portfolio with Archos-branded Nubia phones. Nubia is known for its premium products, forward-thinking designs and innovative technology. Who knows, maybe that’s exactly what the French company needed to make a better name for itself in the European market.

Either way, the Archos Diamond Omega was born and it’s no secret that the handset is a rebranded ZTE Nubia Z17s. We’ve been keeping a close eye on recent Nubia releases, particularly in the flagship tier, so it made sense to take a close look at the Archos Diamond Omega/Nubia Z17s as soon as we had the chance.

Archos Diamond Omega review

We’ll likely continue to use the Archos and Nubia model names interchangeably throughout the review, as it’s the exact same phone in terms of both hardware and software. And as the name suggests, the Z17s is very similar to the Nubia Z17 that we recently reviewed.

Key features of the Archos Diamond Omega/Nubia Z17:

  • Body: Corning Gorilla Glass front, curved glass back, metal frame
  • Screen: 5.73″ LTPS IPS LCD, resolution 1080 x 2040 pixels (17:9)

major flaws

  • No memory expansion slot
  • No 3.5mm audio jack
  • No stereo speakers

It seems that the Nubia design team is another team embracing the ultra-wide trend. With so many large displays we’ve seen in recent months, it’s hardly the novelty that helps a phone stand out anymore. You know what we mean, even if you somehow missed it. However, we have to note that Archos / Nubia do not stick to the widespread 18:9 standard for reasons of originality or other unspecified reasons. Instead, the phone’s screen has an aspect ratio of 17:9 and a resolution of 1080 x 2040 pixels.

There’s no obvious reason for this display size: the Archos Diamond Omega doesn’t have a home button on its ample chin. This time there’s a pair of selfie cameras above the display, but we can’t see how the extra lens necessitated the odd aspect ratio. We’ve just got to assume that Nubia wanted to embrace the new trend in a slightly different way, which isn’t a bad thing in a sea of increasingly similar devices.

If nothing else, it definitely caught our attention. Follow us as we find out what sets the Archos Diamond Omega apart and how different it is from the Nubia Z17.
