LG Q6 review - LG Q6 review

introduction

LG has gone all-in on its flagships this year with the 18:9 display aspect ratio – both the G6 and V30 use this spec, which has become incredibly trendy in 2017. The big screens have only recently started making their way to midrangers, and on that front LG was one of the first to deliver with the Q6.

If you look at the front, it’s easy to mistake it for a G6, especially if you don’t have the higher-end model available for a size comparison. The Q6 is slightly smaller but retains the same frameless design centered around a 5.5-inch rounded-corner LCD screen.

On the back, however, the similarities aren’t as striking, as the Q6 is cheaper and the glass of its larger and more powerful sibling has been swapped for plastic. The metal frame is still there and feels reassuringly good when holding the phone.

The Q6 is a device meant to impress with its modern screen but ultimately built for a specific price point. Therefore, there are compromises in many areas. It’s the phone to buy if you love the looks of the G6 but don’t want to spend that much money.

Key features of the LG Q6

  • Body: Aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass 3 front, plastic back; MIL-STD-810G certified for extreme temperatures, rain, humidity, sand and dust
  • Advertisement: 5.5″ IPS LCD, 2160 x 1080 resolution, 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio, 442 ppi
  • Backup camera: 13 MP, f/2.2 aperture, 1/3″ sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size, 1080p@30fps video recording
  • Front camera: 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture, 1/5″ sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size, 100 degree field of view
  • Operating system: Android 7.1.1 Nougat
  • chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 435; Octa-core CPU (1.4GHz Cortex-A53), Adreno 505 GPU
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage (Q6a), 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage (Q6), 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage (Q6+); Dedicated microSD slot for cards up to 256GB
  • Battery: 3,000 mAh Li-Po (sealed)
  • Connectivity: single or dual SIM; LTE-A, 2-band carrier aggregation, Cat.7 (300/100Mbps); microUSB; WLAN b/g/n; GEOGRAPHICAL POSITIONING SYSTEM; Bluetooth 4.2; FM radio
  • Various: single rear-firing speaker; 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom

major flaws

  • No fingerprint scanner
  • No fast or wireless charging
  • Single rear-facing speaker
  • No USB Type-C port
  • No 5GHz WiFi
  • Pretty confusing naming situation as the Q6, Q6+ and Q6a are basically the same device just with different amounts of RAM and storage

As with any non-flagship product, what matters most is whether LG has managed to balance the spec sheet here well enough that the Q6 is reasonable for most users. You shouldn’t expect top performance in any area, of course, but some omissions like the fingerprint sensor are quite confusing, especially considering that most of this phone’s competitors are happy to use the biometric authentication method, even at lower price points.
