(Pocket-lint) – In early June 2021, the company revealed a host of new things during AMD’s Computex keynote, including RDNA 2-powered mobile GPUs and FidelityFX Super Resolution.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). But what does it do and how does it work?

What is AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution?

In theory, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is a technology designed to give gamers the best of both worlds. When it’s enabled, you no longer have to choose between high frame rates and high-resolution graphics.

FidelityFX Super Resolution (aka FSR) is essentially designed to enhance your graphics while gaming. This allows you to output graphics with a higher frame rate, but also with 4K. For example, while the game engine renders at 1080p, the final output is 1440p or 4K.

AMD’s technology uses an “advanced edge reconstruction algorithm” to upscale each frame sent.

Similar to Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution has four different modes. Ultra quality, quality, balance and performance. At one end of the spectrum, you have Ultra Quality, which focuses on the best graphics, while Performance gives you the highest FPS.

The idea is that ultra quality mode would give you higher frame rates than you would try to run games natively at a high resolution.

FidelityFX Super Resolution apparently makes two passes to improve the visual quality of the final graphic. The first is an upscaling edge reconstruction algorithm that overhauls the graphics, and a second that sharpens the final image and adds more clarity.

Interestingly, the initial resolution changes depending on the mode selected. For example, if the final output is 4K, Ultra quality mode would first render at 2954 x 1662 before upscaling. While Quality mode uses 2560×1440 and Balanced mode uses 2259×1270, Performance mode uses 1080p.

What GPUs does FidelityFX Super Resolution work with?

FidelityFX Super Resolution was designed to work with many more graphics cards than Nvidia’s DLSS offering. Currently FSR is supported by AMD’s RX 6000, RX 5000, RX 500 and 400 graphics cards. Interestingly, it also works on a variety of Nvidia GPUs – 10 series cards and up.

From the looks of it, FSR is compatible with 100+ AMD processors with Radeon graphics and Radeon GPUs.

FSR is now generally available. If you have the right gear and a game that supports it, all you need is the latest AMD Radeon driver to get started.

Due to the openness of FSR, there is a possibility that it will also appear on consoles in the future.

Which games support FSR

Like Nvidia’s DLSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution relies on game developers adding the option to use it in their games. According to AMD, 80 game developers are working to make this happen, and there are over 110 games that currently support it or will soon do so. These games include:

  • 1800
  • Arma Reforger
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • asterisk
  • Arcadegedon
  • Baldur’s Gate III
  • death loop
  • DOTA 2
  • dolmens
  • edge of eternity
  • evil genius 2
  • godfall
  • Grounded
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • hit man 3
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition
  • FarCry6
  • Farming simulator 22
  • Leave
  • ghost walker
  • kinghunt
  • The Journey of the Lego Builder
  • myst
  • Necromunda: Hired Weapon
  • Raji: An Ancient Epic Enhanced Edition
  • Resident Evil: Village
  • Sniper Elite 5
  • Swordsman Remake
  • Terminator Resistance
  • The crack breaker
  • Aftermath of World War II
  • Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodhunt#
  • V-rising
  • 22 racing series

There will be more games in the future and you can now see the list and ask your favorite games for support.

AMD Super Resolution in action

AMD has posted a short featurette on YouTube demonstrating the optimization work for Far Cry 6. In this video, the company showed examples of its own ray tracing capabilities and optimizations to help players get the most out of the game.

One of those improvements included support for FidelityFX Super Resolution, which will display the game at 90 FPS instead of 60 FPS at the same graphics settings. While it doesn’t show exactly what settings were used, nor what hardware the game was running on, it’s still quite a performance boost.

What about AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0?

Since launch, AMD has worked to improve AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). The company recently released version 2.0. This upgrade uses a temporal upscaling algorithm that uses earlier frame data to achieve much better upscaling results. It also replaces in-game Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) with optimized, higher-quality anti-aliasing technology.

AMD says FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 doesn’t require machine learning like DLSS or Intel’s Xe Super Sampling (XeSS), so it works with a wider range of graphics cards, including non-AMD cards.

FSR 2.0 is said to offer “significantly higher image quality” than the original FSR, even with all quality presets and resolutions. And in performance mode, you can get up to three times the FPS.

However, FSR 2.0 requires more powerful hardware to get the best results. AMD recommends the RX 5700 XT and RX 6700 XT if you’re looking for good graphics in 4K. It’s optimized for AMD RDNA2 hardware, but should also work well on other GPUs at lower resolutions.

Interestingly, FSR 2.0 will also be included in the Xbox Series X and S dev kit, so it should be easier for developers to incorporate it into future Xbox games as well.

Which games support AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0?

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 requires developers to support it and add the technology to games. It will take time for games to support this, but some games already do. Deathloop was the first game to support FSR and more will be added in the future.

Current games supporting AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 include:

  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
  • death loop
  • Farming simulator 22
  • God of War

What other games will have FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0?

There are other games coming with or being updated to support FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0. These games currently include:

  • world of the abyss
  • hit man 3
  • Rescue Team: Live!
  • great people
  • The Callisto Protocol

FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 Open Source

FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is open source and AMD has now published the source code for it on GitHub. This means it will be much easier for developers to ensure compatibility with future games.

The code also supports DirectX 12 and Vulkan, as well as potential future support for Unreal Engine 5.
