(Pocket-lint) – When the Xiaomi 12 series launched, the top-of-the-line flagship, the 12 Ultra, was conspicuous in its absence. But now the company has confirmed that the 12 series will be replaced by the 12S range and – below it – the 12S Ultra.

This phone is the very latest showcase of everything Xiaomi can pack into a modern phone, with improved camera options and the highest-end specs when it comes to the display and chipset.

Availability and price of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra

  • Starts July 4th
  • From RMB 5,999 in China – (approx. $895/£740/€860)

Xiaomi unveiled the 12S line of three phones on July 4 during an event where it showcased its first Leica-branded camera units. Including the 12S Ultra, as well as the 12S and 12S Pro. Retail availability is initially limited to China. There’s no word on when or if the products will be available outside of China.

As for price, given its flagship status, the phone will come at a hefty price tag. It will be available in China for 5999 yuan, which is around £740 or $895 at the time of writing.

However, we can’t imagine the actual price outside of China would be anywhere near as low. Taking the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra as an example, which landed at £1,199 upon its release, we would expect a price closer to that found in western markets.

draft

  • 163.17 x 74.92 x 9.06mm – 225g
  • IP68 waterproof and dustproof
  • Large circular camera unit
  • Leather-like back

One thing stands out on the back of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra – its camera hump. The camera unit is a large, circular protrusion that takes up almost all of the space in the top third of the phone and features the triple camera system.

The 12S Ultra doesn’t seem at all interested in playing it safe, pairing that massive camera unit with a classy leather-like material on the back. In our view, it’s an eye-catching — and stunning — implementation.

Aside from the camera unit, everything about the design tells the story that this is a premium flagship phone. It’s IP68 certified for water and dust resistance and has the back covered in a leather-like material available in a classy Verdant Green and a Classic Black.

Otherwise it’s the typical flagship design, with an aluminum body and curved display dominating the front area, with a punch-hole camera in the center near the top edge.

Display and hardware specifications

  • 6.73-inch AMOLED LTPO Display – Adaptive 120Hz
  • Resolution 3200 x 1440 – 522 ppi
  • Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 – 8GB/256GB, 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB
  • 4860 mAh battery – 67W wired charging – 50W wireless charging

Like the Xiaomi 12 Pro launched earlier this year, the 12S Ultra has a large 6.73-inch display. This particular display is a quadHD+ 3200×1440 panel with a pixel density of 522 pixels per inch.

Like all top phones, the display has a 120Hz refresh rate and uses an advanced LTPO panel, meaning it can adapt its refresh rate to content, going as low as 1Hz on static displays. It can also reach a peak brightness of up to 1500 nits and supports all major HDR standards: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG.

As for the core hardware, it’s the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that runs the show alongside 8GB or 12GB, depending on which variant you opt for. This chipset is of course Qualcomm’s latest at the time of writing, which not only boosts performance but also means the battery lasts longer.

That battery itself is a 4860mAh battery with support for 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Not quite as fast as the 120W wired charging found on Xiaomi’s other 2022 phones, but still fast enough to make charging very convenient.

cameras

  • Triple camera system
    • 50 MP main – 1 inch IMX989 sensor
    • 48MP ultra wide
    • 48MP telephoto lens
  • ToF sensor

From the design of the phone’s camera hump, it’s clear that the 12S Ultra has a wide range of cameras to take advantage of when taking photos and videos.

Xiaomi has teamed up with Sony to create a new 50.3 megapixel sensor: the IMX989. It’s a 1-inch sensor, which makes it huge compared to virtually every other flagship sensor out there. Xiaomi has also teamed up with Leica to create the mobile Sumicron lenses, which come with a special coating to improve optical performance.

Joining this main lens is the ultra-wide 48-megapixel f/2.2 camera and f/4.1 periscope zoom lens with a 48-megapixel sensor. There’s also plenty of impressive-sounding technology packed into each of the three lenses. Each uses pixel binning to create roughly 12-megapixel images, and each has phase-detection autofocus.

The ultrawide also has macro capabilities, while the telephoto zoom lens also features an advanced stabilization system called “HyperOIS” to smooth out any handshake even at the top end of the zoom length.

Even video recording capabilities sound really good. In standard recording mode, you can record at resolutions up to 8K (7680 x 4320) at 24 fps, or you can record Dolby Vision (10-bit/HLG) at 4K at up to 60 fps and slow motion up to an incredible 480 frames record per second.
