Sony unveiled four smartphones at the last MWC in Barcelona, but the cheapest of the quartet – the Xperia L3 – was easy to miss. The Xperia 1 had the 4K and the company’s first triple camera, the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus brought 21:9 cinemawide screens to the mid-range, while the Xperia L3 seemed to have no trump card of its own. Let’s find out if that’s actually the case, or if there’s more to the entry-level handset than the spec sheet suggests.
The Sony Xperia L3 is the manufacturer’s cheapest smartphone for 2019, but unlike the previous L devices, this one seems more ambitious and appealing. Adopting Sony’s latest design language, the L3 has a trendy large screen, although its aspect ratio is 18:9 and not 21:9.
Another cool feature carried over from the premium models is the side-mounted fingerprint reader. The site is one of the best places to put a biometric scanner and has already proven to be very convenient and natural.
The Xperia L3’s main camera isn’t particularly exciting with its 13 MP sensor and f/2.2 lens, but it does have a 2 MP depth sensor for portraits and simulated bokeh.
Finally, the Helio P22 is one of the weakest chips out there, but it could do well under that 720p display. We’ll learn more about that in a moment, but first, let’s take a thorough look at the spec sheet.

The Xperia L3 has some obvious omissions – the chipset, which we mentioned earlier, but also the Android version is Oreo instead of Pie, and there’s no info if the L3 will ever get Android 9. And the phone doesn’t even come with a fast charger even though it supports USB PD.
On the plus side, the Xperia L3 packs a Gorilla Glass 5 to protect the screen, there’s a 3.5mm audio jack, a microSD slot, and FM radio is supported, and we’re sure there will be many people will appreciate that.
Unboxing the Sony Xperia L3
The Xperia L3 is packaged in a generic Sony paper box – meaning it has a few Xperia inscriptions on it all along. Inside we found the Xperia L3 itself, a USB-C cable and a 7.5W charger.
The Xperia L3 supports Fast Charging, but you’ll need to purchase a compatible PD charger separately if you want to use it.
